Riddler Unit 1 Science Vocabulary Terms

If you choose, you can make flashcards to help you remember these terms.  Remember, don’t write every word down on the back of your flashcard.  Just write down key terms

Ecosystems:  all interacting organisms that live in an environment as well as abiotic parts
Organisms:  any living thing
Micro-organisms:  any organism too small to view by the naked eye
Species:  a group of organisms that can successfully mate with each other
Herbivore:  an animal that eats plants
Niche:  both the location in which an organism lives, and the role it plays within its ecosystem
Population:  a group of organisms of the same species, living together
Producer:  an organism that creates its own food
Habitat: where an animal calls home
Carnivore:  an animal that eats flesh
Decomposer:  an organism that breaks down dead or waste materials
Consumer:  an organism that cannot make its own food and must feed on plants or other animals
Biosphere:  an ecosystem comprising the entire earth and living organisms and the atmosphere
Community:  a group of interacting populations that live in an area Omnivore:  an animal that eats both plants and animals
Food Chain: a model how food energy passes from organism to organism
Food Web: a network of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem Predator:  an organism that catches and eats other organisms 
Prey:  an organism that is caught and eaten by another organism
Photosynthesis:  how plants obtain energy
Sustainability:  when natural resources are being renewed as quickly as they are being used
Stewardship:  the careful and responsible management of something for which you’re responsible
Greenhouse Effect:  Trapping of heat around the Earth by greenhouse gasses
Endangered Species:  a species that is in danger of dying out or becoming extinct
Threatened species:  A species that could become endangered
